About Magpie
Welcome to Magpie by me, Aleksandra Gadzala Tirziu. I’m happy you’re here.
Magpie is a platform for publishing interesting ideas about world politics, culture, technology, and current events. More than that, it’s a place for grappling with the world as it is, not as some might wish it to be. It’s a place for free thinking and deep inquiry, and for getting to the heart of the matter — whatever that matter may be.
I decided to call this newsletter ‘Magpie’ after Magpie Lane in Oxford, England. The narrow, historic lane links the cobbled Merton Street with the High Street – joining the old with the new(–ish). It is a passage that I traversed daily during my time there. So, in defiance of a world that is becoming too siloed, Magpie is also about connections. Spirited debate in place of echo chambers, truth rather than tribalism, and big–picture, systemic thinking that helps to illuminate the linkages between global ideas and events.
In many ways this project has been a long time coming. It pulls together efforts that were previously scattered across several places on the internet, and allows me to channel the curiosity that underpins so much of my personal and professional life. I am delighted to have this space, and to also be able to experiment. Most of the time I will write columns. Other times I will share compilations of analyses, essays, and reports that I think are interesting or important (or both). I’m also thrilled to be able to recommend the writings, recipes, music, and works of people who I admire.
